Legion Timeline

The Story so Far...

Legion born in a shed

Carl & Jerry both had a fondness for the open road so starting a delivery business seemed the right thing to do. Using support from family to buy a van and a basic income from Margaret Thatchers enterprise allowance scheme got the duo out of the starting blocks. Legion HQ being a garden shed.

Opportunity knocks

Carl has always believed in creating the right impression, so a liveried van and driver’s uniform were the order of the day. A Legion van was spotted one day in Blackburn by a scout looking for delivery companies to join a fledgling overnight delivery network. Called Transend, the network was backed by Macmillan publishing who provided plenty of parcels for delivery to high street bookshops.

1990
Moving on up

Overnight networks were quite the new thing in the early 90’s and the lads at Legion had to adapt quickly. Not only did they need to secure new premises in the form of an industrial unit they also had to procure a new fangled device called a fax machine…whatever next.

1991
Tragedy strikes

Alas, Transend bites the dust as Macmillan decides that running a delivery network is too involved for their needs. A new network emerges from the contacts and delivery companies who helped get Transend off the ground.

1993
10 year anniversary

After ten years in the delivery business Carl & Jerry were still commited to the principles of overnight networks, the problem was one of instability. Many overnight networks came and went in the 90’s as running them proved to be notoriously difficult. A big factor being the many independent voices of each delivery operator up and down the land which could tear apart the unity of the network which proved to be a major pitfall. It was tough going…

1999
New Horizons

Carl & Jerry took a bold decision to re-shape their business as a 3rd party logistics company. By closely integrating with several of the corporate run delivery networks that had started to dominate the overnight logistics industry they could offer much more. UK, European and Worldwide services based on best service performance principles became their focus.

1998
IT Revolution

The emergence of parcel scanning and tracking was a great leap forward for consumers of parcel delivery services, bringing with it novel technologies. Carl & Jerry were keen to make the most of the varied IT platforms provided by each delivery network and embarked on a project to simplify matters for their customers by creating a unified system. Called Allegiance, the online platform that Legion created forms the data backbone of their operation to this day.
